Scientists have created a new air filter antibacterial technology that can kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2, within seconds. This technology was developed by researchers from the University of Birmingham in collaboration with NitroPep Ltd and Pullman AC. This technology includes applying a chemical biocide called chlorhexidine digluconate (CHDG) to the air filter.
The processed filters were tested in laboratories, industrial air condensing units, and on board trains operating on British railways. The results indicate that the processed filter is very effective in eliminating pathogens, while the standard filter is not. This technology can provide a potential solution to prevent airborne infections from spreading in crowded spaces such as offices, shopping centers, and public transportation. This technology can be applied to existing filters and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems without any modifications.
This technology is the latest stage of antibacterial coating research being conducted by Dr. Felicity de Cogan and her team. This study was funded by multiple institutions and published in the journal Scientific Reports.
